The Bird is the Word

I should have posted this sooner: the latest addition to our family is a peach-faced lovebird we’ve named Oliver.

A couple of weeks ago, client of mine in midtown found him on their 42nd floor balcony (!) and took him in; unfortunately as much as they loved him they found he was too loud to keep at their financial services firm. Being somewhat comfortable with birds having baby-sat for Michael’s parrot, Harry, and given Tania’s recent obsession with all things Aves, we decided to give him a home.

He’s about 6 inches tall, very curious and sweet. We’ve had him for a week, and he’s adjusting to his new home pretty well I think. He’s even winnning Mylo over.

See more of him here.

New Gadget #1: Nokia 6620

Just wanted to make a quick post to talk about my new phone, the Nokia 6620 — it’s a smartphone with camera, stereo audio playback and EDGE for pseduo-high speed data.

I’m going to experiment with using it as my day-to-day music player, since it will play back .mp3 and .aac files; however, initially I was saddend to discover that the .aac format it wants is different from those that are generated by iTunes.

Geek IRC/IM Satire

For all you uber-geeks out there (or teenagers?):

Found this via Joi Ito,QDB is a collection of hilarious IRC and IM quotes that I’m assuming many of which are invented, but some are probably totally real.

I.E.,

everyone got into discussions about how i must have an eating disorder. 😐
psyko, if you throw up right after eathing… intentionaly… you have an eating disorder
Pysko: and if your prone to sharp, stabbing pains in your eye after a meal, chances are you have a fork lodged in it.

Anyway, many require a huge geek quotient to appreciate the humor, but I figure if you’ve ever IRC’ed you pass that test.

iPod Therefore I Translate

I just purchased this cool new app for iPod called Talking Panda language translation/training software. It’s a really cool concept, where you navigate to phrases through the notes section on your ‘pod and you can see the English/Spanish (or French or Japanese) translations, as well as hear the phrase spoken by a native speaker. Quite impressive. Definitely check it out!

Getting Political

“Broken Engagement
” by Gen. Wesley Clark

>We should have pride in our history, confidence in our principles, and take security in the knowledge that we are at the epicenter of a 228-year revolution in the transformation of political systems. But recognizing the power of our values also means understanding their meaning. Freedom and dignity spring from within the human heart. They are not imposed. And inside the human heart is where the impetus for political change must be generated.
