Weird File on my Drive

Found a weird file on my desktop — “ChassisD.log” I’m not sure where it came from… it was last modified on the 22nd, created on the 13th… it appears to be some networking related thing, but I’m really not sure…. anyone?

  1. A file with this name (ChassisD.log) appears on my desktop each time I shut down the software HP provided for the Scanjet 4670 scanner. It’s likely a problem with the version 5.3.1 of Precision Pro (hah!) more than one specific to the scanner model. Are you using an HP scanner? HP’s techies are baffled. They could recreate the problem, have no clue why it’s showing up. We worked that out three months ago. No fix yet. Takes HP a year or more, usually, to wake up enough to fix bugs like this. They should put their programmers on a steady caffeine I.V. drip.

  2. A-ha! It did coincide with the installation of my HP 4670 scanner.

Guess it’s not a big deal, though I must say the Precision Pro software really sucks. I had to move the software out of its regular location so that it wouldn’t load every login, the photoshop plugin doesn’t work right — you have to use “ScanJet” and not PrecisionPro or it’ll just hang — and the whole thing just seems really shoddy.

If it weren’t for the killer form factor I’d be majorly bummed about the purchase, but I value my deskspace as much as anything. and mostly i use photoshop to tweak my images, but a little more control at the scanning stage would be nice.

Are there any 3rd party scanning apps (like Silverfast or something) that work with the 4670?

  3. Hi Guys.

I also see this boring “ChassisD.log” file on my desktop since I installed the HP 4670 scanner. I hope there will be a solution soon !

To avoid the “Precision Pro” or “HP Director” software automatically running at login, it may be smarter to go in “System Preferences > Accounts”, then select your account, choose the tab “Startup Items”, select “HP Director” and click on the “minus” sign below the list.
